"Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." Galatians 5:25 (NIV)
For many years, I participated in the twenty-mile Walk for Hunger with friends. While it took us hours to complete, the time passed by quickly because we spent the time chatting and enjoying our time together. The one year I did it by myself was a very long walk and far less enjoyable.
Our spiritual life is a walk too. In this journey, we do not walk alone but with the Holy Spirit. If we race ahead or lag behind, we miss out on the total pleasure of its companionship. Walking in step, though, we experience its fruits, "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." (22-23)
Father God, we thank you for your Spirit. Please help us to keep in step with the Spirit and enjoy its fullness in our lives. Amen.
