“Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:9 NRSV
In raising children, our goal is to teach the values, morals, and ethics they need to become good people. Our kids observe this not only in what we say but also by watching what we do. As they get older and we have an opportunity to witness the things we taught them in action, we feel good knowing we had some little part in their maturity.
Preceding the verse today, Paul writes, “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things (v. 8).” These were the attributes Paul wished them to uphold, so they might fully experience God’s peace.
As modern-day evangelists, these words to us are still valid. All the things that we have learned and received and heard in Christ give us peace because in following them we are living in-tune with God’s will. In doing so, we also demonstrate to those around us the positive message of Christ. Through the way, we conduct our daily lives we serve as a witness.
Gracious God, we give thanks for your peace. Through your Word, the example of Christ, and the Holy Spirit’s indwelling, we have learned how to find solace and serenity in you. Please let our lives serve as a light to those around us today. Let them see us the peace that comes from you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings!
Pastor Tim
