And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. Romans 8:2 NLT
In Romans 8:1-17, Paul explains what is perhaps the least understood personage of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. While it may seem obvious, we can only receive the Holy Spirit because we belong to him. It is a gift given in accepting Jesus; it cannot be obtained any other way.
Because of our sinful nature, the Law of the Old Testament was not enough; Jesus needed to come. Through his death and resurrection, Christ conquered death so that we may overcome the power of sin that leads to the death of our souls. With Jesus' work on earth complete, he promised not to leave us alone but to send a helper, "the life-giving Spirit."
Having accepted Christ as our Lord and becoming one of the Father's children, we are filled with the Holy Spirit. We are provided a moral compass that helps direct us away from sin, convicts us when we stray, and guides us back unto righteous paths, leading us ever closer to sanctification.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for sending your Son to atone for our sins and for the Holy Spirit to give us power over temptation. We belong to you; lead and guide us into your will. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
