Minding Your Scorecard

“All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor’s work, will become a cause for pride.” Galatians 6:4 (NRSVUE)

The Masters wrapped up on Sunday with Rory McIlroy taking the win, finishing at 16‑under par. Watching golfers at that level can be both inspiring and discouraging for the casual hacker. When I played more regularly (though never very often or very well), I often struggled to enjoy the game because I kept comparing myself to players who could drive farther, hit straighter, and reach the green in half the strokes.

But the truth is, if I had given the same attention to my own swing, my own practice, my own progress, I could have improved significantly — not to the level of the Masters, but certainly to something more presentable. The problem wasn’t my ability; it was my habit of measuring myself against someone else’s scorecard.

Though Paul never swung an iron or putted a green, he understands the human tendency to measure ourselves against someone else’s performance. He reminds us that the real work of discipleship isn’t comparison but honest, humble attention to our own life with God.

When we stop watching someone else’s scorecard and start attending to the small, faithful practices that shape our own, something shifts. We begin to notice the growth we had overlooked. We find joy in progress that once felt insignificant. And the “pride” Paul speaks of isn’t arrogance — it’s the quiet satisfaction of knowing we are tending the life God has entrusted to us.

In a world that constantly invites us to measure ourselves against others, Paul offers a different invitation: test your work. Pay attention to the Spirit’s slow, steady shaping in your life. Celebrate the grace that is at work in you, not because it outperforms anyone else, but because it is real, and it is yours.

Gracious God, teach us to cultivate the life You’ve entrusted to us with honesty and hope. Free us from the habit of measuring ourselves against others, and help us to see the quiet work of grace unfolding in our own hearts. Grant us courage to practice faithfulness in the small things and to rejoice in the growth that comes from walking with You. Amen.

Grace & Peace, Pastor Tim
