Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. James 1:22-24 NIV
The chances are you see yourself in a mirror several times a day. Usually, there is one hanging on the wall behind our bathroom sink. Often we only glance at our reflection as we wash our hands and forget what we saw the minute we walk away. But there are other times when we scrutinize our image as we perform tasks, shave, comb our hair, brush our teeth, etc.
When we read, listen and meditate upon the Word of God, we look at ourselves in the mirror. In these times, we don't take a passing glance but ponder on how its message is reflected or missing in our lives. There may be times we don't like what we see. We can turn blindly away, ignoring the image, or better yet, take action. If we see our hair askew, we comb it, something caught in our teeth we floss and brush, our spiritual life should be no different.
Father God, we thank you for your word and their power to transform us. Please give us the courage to be not simply hearers but also doers. Please help us see our reflections in your sacred text and change what we should. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
