Names

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10 NRSV

There is often some story behind the names our parents give us. Often they have a link somewhere back in our family. For example, my middle name, Ray, is short for my Great Uncle Raymond. They may reflect a favorite place or origin, like Asia and Alexandria. Our granddaughter Blair is named after a building on the Plymouth State campus where Kirk and Cassie met. Or they can represent human characteristics, such as Faith, Hope, and Comfort. Whatever our name and reason, they are a large part of our identity.

The name of the Lord has different characteristics; in today's verse, he is a fortified tower—a place of safety and refuge. God gave our Lord a unique name, too, one that invokes mighty power. Philippians 2:9-11 says, "Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

The name of Jesus is undoubtedly a place of safety, but it also has the power to erase our sins, heal all manner of illnesses, and provide comfort in times of trouble. When we call on his holy name, miracles happen.

Father God, we acknowledge Jesus Christ as our Lord. We call on his mighty name right now for healing for the many who are sick. We ask for comfort and peace for those who are suffering losses. We pray for forgiveness for our sins. We do this in confidence, knowing there is no name above Jesus. Jesus, our savior, and intercessor, you are worthy of all our praise and worship, and we give you thanks. Amen.
