No Waiting for the Water

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:38–39, NRSVUE)

Have you ever waited for something? Perhaps someone made you a promise that wouldn’t be fulfilled for a while. It’s like the little boy standing on the porch of the farm with his grandfather, looking out over the vast acres of wheat, when he says, “Boy, one day this will all be yours.” It’s a beautiful moment, but it’s also a waiting moment — a promise spoken, but not yet lived.

Scripture is full of those porch‑side promises. Isaiah sings, “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” Joel declares that God will one day pour out the Spirit on all flesh. Jesus meets a weary woman at a well and tells her of water that will become a spring gushing up to eternal life.

Then comes the turning point — Jesus saying, “The hour has come,” and later breathing the Holy Spirit onto His disciples after the resurrection. And finally, at Pentecost, Peter stands before the crowd and proclaims that what was promised has now been poured out, that the long‑awaited Living Water has arrived in full.

From Isaiah’s promise to Joel’s prophecy, from the woman at the well to the breath of Jesus in the upper room, Scripture keeps telling the same story: the Living Water is coming — and then, suddenly, the Living Water is here.

There is no more waiting, no more standing on the porch looking toward a distant inheritance. In Christ, the well has already been opened. The Spirit is already flowing. And the invitation is as immediate as it is generous: come to Him and drink. The only requirement is the one Peter names — turn toward Christ, receive the gift, and let the rivers of living water begin to flow from your own life.

Holy God, thank you for the promise fulfilled, for the Living Water that flows freely and immediately to all who turn toward Christ. Quench our thirst today. Let your Spirit rise within us with joy, with courage, with compassion. Make our lives streams of grace for a thirsty world. In the name of Jesus, the One who still invites us to come and drink. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
