“And the Lord will become king over all the earth; on that day the Lord will be one and his name one.” Zechariah 14:9 NRSV
When we think of apocalyptic books in scripture, we often think of Revelation. True, it is one of the best known, but there are several in the Old Testament, Zechariah included. These books all have something in common. A time when the one true God will reign, and any other gods brought to their knees. Order will return to a state akin to the Garden of Eden.
As Christians, we don’t know when this will happen, but we are confident it will. From that belief comes our hope in life eternal. Should we stand by idly waiting for this day to come? Certainly not! Our job until that day is to share this hope with others. We should approach each day as if that new earth is already here. How will this look? We cannot fully comprehend such a time, but we can imagine. A world where everyone universally shares peace, love, acceptance, health, freedom, shelter, safety, and plenty – feel free to add to the list. Can we bring this kingdom about? Perhaps not, and certainly not without God’s help, but we certainly must try.
God, we give you thanks for this day. Thank you for the promise you give us of life eternal in your new world. Help us this day approach the world as it exists as if your new kingdom is already here. Help us to be your messengers of transformation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Shalom,
Pastor Tim
