Only One First

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” — Matthew 6:33 (NIV)
In the comedy Talladega Nights, fictional NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby lives by the motto, “If you ain’t first, you’re last.” It’s an over-the-top line from a satirical film, but it echoes a deeper truth: what we put first shapes everything that follows.
To call something “first” is to give it our focus, our energy, our allegiance. First shapes the rest. It’s the compass point that sets our direction, the heartbeat that drives our choices.
Sometimes “first” is admirable—like graduating at the top of your class or excelling in your vocation. But not all firsts are good.
Addiction puts the bottle first.
Greed puts gain first.
Fear puts safety first.
Even good, "healthy" things—careers, food, clothing, shelter—can quietly edge their way into first place.
Jesus names these very things: “What shall we eat? What shall we drink? What shall we wear?” (Matthew 6:31). He doesn’t dismiss them. He simply reorders them, placing God as primary to all.
When we seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, the rest finds its proper place. God provides what we need. But he asks for our hearts first.
There’s only room for one First.
When God holds that place, everything else finds its place.
So today, let’s name what’s competing for first in our lives. Let’s confess the clutter, the distractions, the idols dressed up as necessities. And let’s return to the One who was first before all things, and in whom all things hold together (Colossians 1:17).
God, you are First—before time, before breath, before need. Yet we confess how often we let other things crowd you out. Forgive us. Reorder our hearts. Teach us to seek your kingdom above all else, trusting that you will provide what we truly need. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Peace & Grace,
Pastor Tim
