Out of the Mouth

So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. - Isaiah 55:11 NIV
The ability to speak is a beautiful gift. If you have ever lost your voice, you have felt the frustration of not being heard even for a short time. We can appreciate the challenges of folks who are deaf and mute. However, unless they and the person they communicate with know American Sign Language (only 1% of the population), they are at a severe disadvantage.
Along with the ability to speak comes the responsibility to use it wisely. The thoughts formed in our brains are sent through our mouths often without much thought. Some folks even take misplaced pride in having "no filters." Today's verse encourages us to use this precious gift for good things, that our words accomplish a holy purpose. In the epistle to the church in Ephesus, Paul says this, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Eph 4:29
God of all good things, we give thanks for speech. We confess we often use that gift inappropriately. We say things, even if unintentional, that are hurtful. Please forgive us and help us to speak with divine purpose. Let our words magnify you. May our speech heal and encourage; let it be witness to your love. We pray this in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
