Outdo One Another

Love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor.- Romans 12:10

A few years ago, I used to work out with two brothers at the gym. These guys would tease each other and take turns to make each exercise just a little crazier. It was competition without being competitive. It worked for them because of their love for each other. I looked forward to weekly training sessions with them because half the time was spent laughing.

Perhaps this is what Paul had in mind when he talked about honoring each other. While not a competition, we are to outdo each other in treating each other with respect and esteem. It's not only okay; it’s encouraged to put others ahead of ourselves. We can do this when we genuinely love each other. There's nothing to say we can't have fun while doing it.

Can you imagine how different the world would look if everyone were to live this way? Loving each as Christ loves and paying honor to each other -- even those with whom we disagree. How would last year, last month, last week, and yesterday be different? Those days are gone, but there are days ahead. Let's see how putting this lesson in practice right now changes the future.

God of love, we give you our thanks and praise. From this day forward, please help us love each other more thoroughly and treat all with civility and respect. May our actions towards each other reflect your love for each of us. We ask this in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Love and Peace,

Pastor Tim
