Overshadowed by Grace

“The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.’” —Luke 1:35 (NIV)

We probably recognize the setting of today’s scripture. The angel Gabriel visits young Mary and tells her how she will be with child. It may be easy to see this verse only as the introduction to the larger story of Christ’s birth. But for a moment, let us pause and focus on a phrase that may be overlooked: “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”

While Mary was given the distinct honor of becoming the mother of God incarnate, we share a common spiritual experience with her. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we acknowledge God’s love and grace for us, and we are forever changed. The Spirit’s overshadowing presence is not limited to one miraculous birth—it is the ongoing miracle of God dwelling with His people.

Scripture confirms this truth again and again. In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.” In Romans 8:15–16, Paul reminds us that the Spirit we receive does not make us slaves, but children of God, testifying that we belong to Him. And in 2 Corinthians 5:17, we hear the transforming promise: “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Mary’s overshadowing was unique, but the Spirit’s overshadowing continues in us. We are invited to yield, to welcome God’s presence, and to let Christ be born anew in our lives. Advent is not only about waiting for Bethlehem—it is about opening ourselves to the Spirit’s power today.

Holy Spirit, overshadow us with your presence. Where we are weary, bring strength. Where we are fearful, bring courage. Where we are doubtful, bring faith. May Christ be born anew in us today, that we may bear witness to your holy love. Amen.

Peace & Grace,

Pastor Tim
