Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” John 20:21 NIV
Fear of what the Jewish leaders would do to them following the crucifixion, the disciples shut themselves in a locked room. Then suddenly, Jesus appears. In this fearful and unnerved state, Jesus' first words of assurance were, "Peace be with you." He repeats these words, but this time sends them on a mission. He does one more thing, though; he breathes the Holy Spirit into them.
These mighty acts are a reminder we are a sent people. Jesus commissions us to carry the freeing news of redemption into the world. As the Father sent him, so also he sends us. However, we do not do this alone; God breathes into us the Holy Spirit. He infused us with his essence. With the confidence of this knowledge, we may go in peace. Regardless of what we may face--whatever hate, threats, and opposition-- God's peace remains with us.
Almighty and gracious God, we thank you for your peace. The peace which calms, encourages, and emboldens. Help us in the confidence of this peace to share your light and love in the world. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
