In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalms 4:8 NIV
Last night, Janice and I experienced a first as grandparents, having our granddaughter Blair overnight. We had enjoyed reading and playing with her, but I grew anxious as bedtime neared. Would she be able to sleep okay in a different place? Not only did she go to sleep immediately, but she also slept soundly the night through. She looked so peaceful when we checked in on her a few times.
We all slept like that once. But, as we grow older, we experience more trouble sleeping. Changes in our physical bodies and mental stress can be causes. Or something that happened that day, or worries, keeps us awake and causes us to sleep fitfully. Whatever the reasons, the youthful deep uninterrupted, peaceful sleep seems gone forever.
King David experienced things that could have kept him awake. There were constant threats to his life, leadership, and nation. Yet, despite all this, he would sleep in peace, secure in the knowledge that God's safety. would keep him safe. God offers that same peace to us today. While we may not experience the undisturbed sleep of babies, we can experience the security found in Christ.
God, our compassionate Parent, surround us with your peace and safety. You welcome us to rest as we turn the events of the day and our worries over to you. We have nothing to fear in you but find comfort and security in your arms as you look lovingly upon our faces like babes. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
