The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. - Psalms 19:7 NIV
As of 2016, there were 4,312 federal laws, with more added each year. On top of that, add the state and municipal statutes, and we have a lot of rules. Man writes them, and while well-intentioned, imperfect. In addition, they are written in legalese, so only trained legal minds can understand and challenge them. Don't get me wrong, we need the law, but the number seems excessive and impractical, and the rules themselves are overly complicated and confusing.
God's law, however, is perfect because he is holy and righteous. His law is understandable; his wisdom is expressed in simple terms, so there is no confusion. the Ten Commandments are easy to comprehend for anyone who bothers to read. Jesus made it even more straightforward, consolidating them into two commandments.
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ - Matthew 22:37-39 NIV
God, of perfect Law, we give you thanks for your care for us. We know we can trust in your statutes, and when we live by them, we demonstrate your righteousness here on earth. Please help us this day to show our love for you and our neighbors. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
