Perspective

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? Psalms 8:3‭-‬4 NIV

Sometimes we just need perspective. We have all done this; we grumble about something that's going wrong, and then we encounter another who has problems considerably worse. That thing that seemed so important is now puny in comparison -- and we may feel a little shame. Today’s verses are also about perspective, that of the heavens, and our place in God’s creation.

We can imagine David sprawled on a hill after a long day of sheep, peering up at the night sky composing this verse. Have you ever gone out into a field with no artificial light anywhere in sight and looked at the stars? The more remote the place, the clearer the vision. How immense is the heavens, so much more than just what we can see; universe upon universe. Now, ponder our place in perspective to all that God commands; doesn’t that make us seem a wee bit small in comparison -- we may feel almost insignificant. But scripture tells us, God loves each and every one of us as a special creation. He knows us by name before we were formed and the numbers of hairs on our heads. Now, don't we suddenly feel exceptional? It sends chills down our spines and raises goosebumps on our arms when we consider what this means. God further blesses us by sending his Holy Spirit to live within us. He does this so we may more fully love and share this love with others. How amazing is his grace!

Precious Father, thank you for loving us so much. We are so small and your domain infinite, yet we are your unique creation. You value us above all your other creations and give us dominion of this earth. We confess we often sin and are unworthy of your grace, yet your love is unfailing. Please forgive us our sins, help us remember how very special we are to you, and help us share this love with others. Amen.

Peace,

Pastor Tim
