Pixelated Towers and Sacred Refuge

"The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” —Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

Recently, Janice and I took our grandson William to see the Minecraft movie. At one point, the characters flee to a tower to escape danger—perhaps from the pig-like villain Malgosha or the silent, explosive Creepers (William would know!).

That scene reminded me how deeply embedded the image of the tower is in our collective imagination. Whether in ancient Jerusalem or pixelated landscapes, towers represent safety, perspective, and a place to regroup.

Children understand this intuitively. When the world feels overwhelming, they seek shelter—whether in a blanket fort, a grandparent’s arms, or a tower on screen. As adults, we often forget we’re allowed to do the same. We don’t need to fight every battle head-on. Sometimes, the wisest move is to retreat—not in fear, but in trust—to the strong tower of God’s presence.

So, whether the enemy is a creeper or cancer, addiction or anxiety, may we remember: the tower still stands. The name of the Lord is still our tower. And we are always welcome inside.

God, thank you for meeting us in ancient cities and animated worlds. Help us remember that your refuge is never out of reach. Amen.

Peace & Grace,

Pastor Tim
