"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." Proverbs 16:9
Plans! We spend much of our human existence, making them. We plan for careers, weddings, babies, birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, and funerals. There is nothing wrong with planning; God gave us the mental facilities so we could do so. The problem arises when we rely totally on our plans.
When we are in a relationship, we involve our significant other in our plans. We value their opinions and feelings and want that to influence your goals. We should do no less with God. In listening to God, he can help us avoid pitfalls and guarantee success. But we need to seek his guidance.
In Matthew 11:29, Jesus shares the image of being yoked. We often only think of this verse in terms of sharing our burdens, but it also works for plans. In walking in-step, yoked together, our programs are no longer just ours but God's as well.
Almighty God, we give you thanks for the capacity to think and plan. We know you desire to be part of those plans and seek your guidance. You want us to succeed. We confess though we often fail to involve you, and sometimes our plans may even be counter to your will. Father, forgive us, and please help us to be better. Be with us today in our planning; guide our steps. In Christ Jesus, we pray. Amen.
