Priorities

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal.” - Matthew 6:19 NRSV

When we pause to reflect upon the wisdom we have gained over the years, one of those items would likely be an evolving sense of priorities. The essential things of our youth -- careers, possessions, money -- become replaced by -- family, friends, and legacy. The tangible items are temporary, bringing pleasure for a brief moment. Instead, our relationships, the connections to those we love and hold dear, maintain their value long after the fleeting disappear.

No matter our age, we must make our relationship with Christ a priority of the highest magnitude, directing our thoughts to the everlasting instead of the temporary. Things of this earth break, fade, erode, rust, lose value, and our stolen -- but this promise of heaven is perpetual. God, who created the universe and everything in it, has made an eternal promise,

God of the eternal, we give you thanks for your promise. We confess at times; we become distracted by the treasures of this earth. Forgive us and remind us instead to focus our eyes on heaven. Please help us to make you the top priority in our lives. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
