Really Free

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast."

Ephesians 2:8‭-‬9 NRSV

I think it's very fair to say not many things in life are free. Usually, there is some string attached. We are bombarded daily with offers to send you a “free” item if you provide your email list. You will receive the gift along with daily email solicitations until you opt-out. Or at your work, you may have received service awards. It is nice to be recognized but honestly, didn't you really work for the “gift”?

Christ's gift of salvation is free--no strings! You can’t earn it no matter how hard you work. To paraphrase today’s scriptures, we can't brag about how we've achieved God's grace; we didn’t do anything except accepting through faith what has already been offered. We can, however, share the joy of this marvelous gift with others. We shouldn't sit idly by doing nothing, but feed the hungry, provide shelter for the homeless, clothe the naked, and visit the prisoner. Whatever works, we must be coupled with our faith and directed by the Holy Spirit.

Heavenly Father, we give thanks for your grace. We acknowledge we can't earn this gift, but it is given freely. We pray for your direction in our actions and for our hearts to be open and obedient. May others see your love through our works and come to accept you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings!

Pastor Tim
