As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man. Proverbs 27:19 ESV
If you spend any time in front of the mirror–doing your hair, shaving–chances are you notice things about yourself—changes to your outward appearance, like thinning or graying hair and new wrinkles. We don't have magic mirrors like in Snow White that tell us what we want to hear; ours show us the reflection of how we look.
Likewise, our hearts serve as a mirror of who we are; the internal spiritual us and their contents cannot be hidden. If our hearts are filled with compassion, gentleness, kindness, and love–godly qualities–that is what others will see too. Our actions demonstrate these.
Sometimes, we may not like the reflection we see in the spiritual mirror. That's okay; it's healthy to recognize we aren't yet who we want to be. But we don't have to remain in that state. We have God's help. The same sanctifying grace by which he makes us aware that we are not yet who we want to be also makes it possible for us to change. Sanctification is a continual transformation, drawing us ever forward in righteousness.
Loving God, thank you for your sanctifying grace. Grant us the courage as we look in our spiritual mirrors to see clearly who we are now and where we need to change. Open our hearts for continual transformation. May our actions reflect your glory. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
