Rest Beyond the Mountains

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
Where do you go when you need to take a breath again? A place of escape from the busyness and restlessness of life?
Picture yourself there, whether it's the hush of mountain trails, the rhythmic crash of ocean waves, or the quiet welcome of a park bench beneath leafy shade. My favorite place is a rustic cabin on a lake in Bath, Maine, where I enjoy glorious sunsets. These places don’t just offer escape; they offer healing. We seek them when the world grows loud, when our schedules crowd out our peace, and when weariness settles deeper than sleep can reach.
But what if true rest—lasting, soul-deep rest—wasn’t found in a place, but in a person?
Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28 is tender, profound, and deeply personal. The original Greek paints a picture not just of physical exhaustion, but of spiritual depletion: those who labor and carry heavy burdens. The promise He offers—ἀναπαύσω, “I will give you rest”—isn’t just a nap or a vacation—both of which are beneficial but not lasting. It’s renewal, restoration, relief—a rest that penetrates places untouched by sleep or scenery.
Unlike the necessary, yet fleeting relief of a weekend getaway, the rest Christ offers meets us mid-struggle, reorients our striving, and revives our spirit. It's not temporary—it’s transformative.
Imagine your restful place again. Let your mind sit on that mountain ridge or beneath that tree. Feel your pulse slow.
Now—imagine Jesus there. Not just beside you, but inviting you to lay down everything: guilt, grief, expectations, perfectionism, even ministry burdens. His rest meets you there. Not to erase the pressures, but to remind you you’re not carrying them alone.
I invite you to take just five intentional minutes to be still in His presence. Not to pray with words or read with urgency—just to receive. Let your breathing align with grace. Let your soul be reminded: He gives rest.
Lord Jesus, I come to you weary, worn, and often unaware of just how heavy the load has become. Thank you for not waiting until I’m strong—you invite me as I am. Teach me, Lord, to rest in you. Let your renewal reach deeper than sleep, and may your presence become the true and lasting sanctuary my soul longs for. Amen.
Peace & Grace,
Pastor Tim
