Shepherds Through Christ

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." John 10:11 NIV
Before this verse, Jesus had healed the blind man on the Sabbath, infuriating the Pharisees. What follows is the discourse with them on what it means to be a good shepherd. We know that Jesus here is talking about himself and his willingness to die for us. But if we listen closely, we can also hear his invitation to move from being sheep to becoming shepherds.
In Jesus' teaching moments, like this one, he demonstrated to his followers—all his sheep—what was most important. Knowing he would lay down his life, he prepared them to carry on his ministry. He groomed them to become shepherds who would lay down their own lives for the gospel and the sake of Jesus' other sheep.
Jesus extends this invitation to us today: not only to follow as sheep, but to guide as shepherds. Like the shepherd who leaves the ninety‑nine to seek the one, we are called to embody Christ’s care by going out to claim the lost, not only protecting the flock but pursuing those who wander.
As shepherds, we may not always be welcomed, yet the work remains critically important. Even when we face humiliation or persecution, Christ gives us the strength to persevere. As Paul writes, “For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)
Gracious Shepherd, you call us not only to follow but to lead in your love. Strengthen our hearts when the path is hard and grant us courage to guide others toward your hope. May our lives reflect your sacrifice, and our words carry your peace. Amen.
Peace & Grace,
Pastor Tim
