Called Out of Nothing

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1 (NIV)
Before there was anything to see, measure, or name, there was God. Long before Galileo peered earnestly into the heavens and showed that the earth moves around the sun, long before telescopes probed far-off galaxies and scientists mapped the immensity of space, our ancestors told a simple, breathtaking truth: everything that exists came into being because God willed it. The early church called this creatio ex nihilo — creation out of nothing.
Imagine those first generations, walking the land, looking up at the sun and moon, and passing along this truth — not as a scientific explanation, but as a confession of faith. “This world is not an accident,” they would say. “We are here because God spoke.” And as the story traveled from voice to voice through the generations, it carried the same assurance: the One who made all things is the One who holds all things.
Today, with our expanded knowledge of the universe, the story becomes even more humbling. We now know we are one small planet among countless celestial bodies, one solar system among billions. Yet Genesis still speaks. It reminds us that the God who shaped galaxies also breathes life into us. The God who called light out of darkness calls us by name.
Creation is not just about beginnings. It is about belonging. It is about remembering that the expanse of the universe does not diminish God’s care for us — it magnifies it.
Creator God, you who called everything into being, call us again today. Speak light into our shadows and purpose into our wandering. As we marvel at the universe You shaped, hold us fast in the truth that we are held, known, and loved by You. Teach us to live with humility, wonder, and gratitude. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
