When Trust Feels Fragile

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

Trust. It’s such a small word, yet it carries a lot of weight. We learn to trust when something—or someone—proves steady over time. Walk into a dark room, flip a light switch, and the room brightens. Do it again and again, and trust forms. But when the light flickers or fails, doubt grows. When it never comes on, trust breaks.

People are like that, too. We’re human. We fail each other—sometimes unintentionally, sometimes purposely, but always deeply. And when trust breaks enough times, we start leaning on our own understanding—our own defenses, our own strength, our own judgment—because it feels safer than risking disappointment again.

But Proverbs reminds us that healing doesn’t come from doubling down on ourselves. It comes from turning toward the One who never fails. We can trust God because:

He is steady when everything else shifts.

He is faithful when people falter.

He is consistent when our understanding is not.

And when we’ve broken trust—when we’ve hurt someone, or closed ourselves off, or relied only on our own wisdom—God invites us to come back again and again, seek forgiveness, and start anew. Christ is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. His love doesn’t flicker. His presence doesn’t fail. And when we lean into Him, He leads us on a path that may not be easy but is always held.

God, thank you for being the one steady place in our unsteady world. Forgive us for the times we’ve leaned on our own understanding and for the ways we’ve broken trust—with you, with others, and even with ourselves. Teach us to trust your heart more than our fears. Heal what is wounded, restore what is broken, and lead us in your ways today. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
