The Greatest Signing Bonus

“All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” (Acts 10:43, CEB)

With the recent NFL Draft fresh in mind, we’ve all seen the moment when a rookie hears their name called and, before they’ve played a single down, they receive a signing bonus—the largest guaranteed part of their contract. It’s a gift that comes first, before any performance, before any proving. It’s simply given because they’ve been chosen.

In today’s verse, we hear of the greatest gift ever offered—and it is open to everyone who believes, not just a select few. Just as rookies receive their signing bonus before they’ve shown what they can do, we receive forgiveness before we’ve done anything to deserve it. And like those rookies, there is a moment when the truth of it reaches us personally—when we realize that God has called our name, that God’s love is not general but specific, not distant but directed toward us. Our belief, that simple step of trust, begins our reconciled relationship with God.

And then comes the wonder of the next verse: “While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on everyone who heard the word.” This is only the second great outpouring in Acts—the first at Pentecost, the second here in the home of the Gentile soldier, Cornelius. It is God’s unmistakable declaration that this gift is for all people. No insiders, no outsiders. No waiting until we understand everything or get ourselves polished up. The Spirit falls on those who are simply listening with open hearts.

Like NFL rookies, when we receive the gift, the journey begins. They don’t take the bonus and retire. They step into the long road from rookie to veteran. There are camps, practices, preseason, and the grind of the regular season. Even in the off‑season, there is the work of staying fit. And when the next draft arrives, new rookies join the team—and the veterans take on the responsibility of guiding them, teaching them, helping them grow.

So it is with us. Forgiveness is the beginning, not the end. The Spirit equips us, shapes us, and strengthens us. And as we grow in faith, we become the ones who help the next believers find their footing, their courage, their hope.

Let today be a reminder that God’s grace finds us early, claims us fully, and invites us into a life that keeps unfolding.

Gracious God, thank you for the gift that meets us before we are ready, before we understand, before we have earned anything at all. Let your Spirit fall on us again today. Strengthen us for the journey, guide us as we grow, and make us generous teachers of those who come after us. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

 Pastor Tim
