The Light of Life

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 (NRSVUE)

Years ago, when Kirk and Jordan were young, we would drive to the Midwest in the summers to visit family. On one of these trips, my brother Greg took us to Bluesprings Caverns. The tour guide led us in a flat‑bottomed boat through the cave. When they turned the boat around, perhaps a couple of miles into the cave, they turned off the lights. The experience of being in total darkness was eerie, unnerving, and disorienting—what a sense of relief when the lights came back on.

Down in those caverns live fish that have adapted to that permanent darkness. Over generations, they have lost their eyesight entirely; they navigate by touch and instinct alone. They survive, but they do not see. They move through life unaware that light even exists.

That image has stayed with me. It is one thing to be in the dark for a moment, knowing the light will return. It is another to become so accustomed to darkness that you no longer expect anything else.

Jesus speaks directly into that condition when he says, “I am the light of the world.” He is not only the light that pushes back the shadows; he is the light that restores sight, direction, and life itself. When we follow him, we do not walk blindly. We are not left to grope our way forward like those fish. His presence becomes the lamp that steadies our steps and shows us the way.

As individuals, when we welcome Christ into our lives, we receive that guiding light. We may still pass through dark places, but we do not walk in darkness. His light goes with us. And as a church, when we bring our lights together, we become a visible witness—a community that helps others find their way toward hope, healing, and life.

Precious Savior, we give you thanks for the light of Jesus, our guide and our life. Amid the shadows around us, help us to follow your light with trust and courage. And as we walk with you, let your light shine through us, that others may find their way. In the name of the Son, we pray. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
