Learning the Shepherd’s Heart

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." John 10:11 (NIV)
Just before Jesus speaks these words, he has healed a man born blind—an act of mercy performed on the Sabbath that infuriated the Pharisees. What follows is Jesus’ extended conversation with them about what true shepherding looks like. Instead of recognizing the healing as a sign of God’s compassion, they either miss the point entirely or respond with hostility, eventually dismissing him as “demon‑possessed and raving mad.” Their reaction reveals the very contrast Jesus is naming: the difference between those who protect the flock and those who care more about their own authority than the well‑being of God’s people.
In moments like this, Jesus is not only teaching but forming his followers—his sheep—in what truly matters. Knowing he would lay down his life, he prepared them to carry on his ministry. He shaped them into shepherds who would one day be willing to lay down their own lives for the gospel and for the sake of future sheep.
Jesus extends the same invitation to us today. He desires that we, like those early disciples, move from being sheep content simply to be led to becoming shepherds who guide, protect, and care for others. There are still many lost sheep in this world who need to hear Christ’s message of love and hope.
The good news that Christ’s forgiveness is greater than all our sins may not always be popular. Following him means turning away from the other things we are tempted to worship, and that can be uncomfortable. Yet even if this message is unpopular, it remains critically important. We may face humiliation or persecution, but we will be given the strength we need to persevere. As Paul writes, “For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)
May we open our hearts to the Good Shepherd who forms us, calls us, and strengthens us for the path ahead.
Good Shepherd, you know us, lead us, and care for us with unfailing love. Shape our hearts to reflect yours, that we may grow from sheep who follow to shepherds who guide, protect, and serve. Give us the courage to share your good news and the strength to persevere when the way is hard. Send us to seek the lost and lift the weary, trusting that you go with us always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
