Simple Kindness

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 NIV

In our Bible study of Romans last night, we talked about the duality within us. Although we really want to follow the Spirit, we constantly struggle against the desires of the flesh. We then shared examples from our own lives. A common theme of the Spirit at work was kindness. The simple act of showing empathy and encouragement to others.

Jesus was continually showing kindness to others. Whether he was calling the tax collector down from the tree, asking the Samaritan woman for a drink at the well, or healing the countless sick. Yes, Jesus was there to spread the message of salvation, but it was done with love and compassion. He encourages us to do the same; we are not to hide the grace we are shown but let our lights shine for all to see.

Most of us will probably never be evangelists like Billy Graham, but all of us can demonstrate Christ's love through kindness. As we look around, we notice people distracted and disconnected -- faces buried in electronic devices, and civility has dwindled. But it is at this time when we most need to demonstrate kindness. Our simple acts of kindness make us stand out from others and provide us with an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
