'“Yes, indeed—God is my salvation. I trust I won’t be afraid. God —yes God !—is my strength and song, best of all, my salvation!” Isaiah 12:2 MSG
If you recall the classic movie Singing in the Rain, you will remember the scene in which Gene Kelly stands with Debbie Reynolds. Standing in the pouring rain, Reynolds says, “This California dew’s a little heavier than usual tonight.” Kelly replies, “From where I stand, the sun is shining all over the place.” Overcome by love, Kelly proceeds with the memorable dance choreography of Kelly dancing through puddles with his umbrella.
We experience that same joy in today's verse. Isaiah 12 is a song of deliverance and salvation, in which the author sees the sunshine amid the fear. So often, in thinking about salvation, we think only of the spiritual freedom gained through Christ. But salvation also means God’s deliverance from our anxieties.
Satan would have us believe our situation is hopeless, fear being the most used tool in his toolbox. Sadly, he is quite the expert and knows how to use it with the most crippling effect. However, as Christians, we know Satan's efforts pale compared to our mighty God. We are assured that God will deliver us again and again when we place our trust in Him. As the author says, not only will God give us the strength we require, but we can sing–and perhaps dance–in the proverbial rains of life with joy.
Compassionate and loving God, we give you thanks for your salvation. For the hope of life, eternal found through Jesus Christ and your deliverance in our everyday lives. We know we only need to trust, and you will give us the strength we need to conquer all our fears. Forgive us those times when we have faltered in our faith. Please help us as we share the promise found in you with others. In Christ Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
