“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." Matthew 7:24 NIV
Before you build a house, you need to know what lies underneath the soil; the builder will likely do a soil test to see how the ground will hold up. You may later end up with foundation cracks and structural integrity problems if you build on a shifting base. However, if you erect your house on solid ground, you save yourself some headaches later.
Our solid spiritual base is built on the Word, and that Word is Jesus. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) When we listen to it -- not just read it, but let it speak to us -- and are obedient, we are building on the rock of our salvation.
That does not mean our foundations will not come under attack. Satan will send draughts, earthquakes, storms, and floods, trying everything he can to shake our foundations. However, we will not shift, nor sink, nor will our foundations crack for our foundations are built solidly on the Word.
God, we give you thanks for your word. As we read your divine Word today, let it speak to us. May we hear your voice of truth in our reading. Then, help us put its wisdom into practice. May we live out its instructions and build the foundations of our houses on its very rock. In your Son Jesus, the Word, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
