"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." - 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV)
Have you ever considered why some churches thrive in their mission while others encounter challenges? Each time I reflect on this passage, it underscores the true purpose of the church: to extend beyond our physical boundaries and fulfill Christ's mission by sharing the good news through both actions and words.
In 2 Corinthians 9:6-8, Paul underscores the principle of sowing and reaping. He urges the Corinthians to give generously and cheerfully, emphasizing that God loves a cheerful giver. Paul’s call to collect contributions for the believers in Jerusalem enduring hardship due to famine was about more than financial aid. It aimed to strengthen the bond between the Gentile and Jerusalem churches, fostering unity and mutual support within the early Christian community.
Regrettably, many modern churches often prioritize the upkeep and enhancement of church buildings. While maintaining a welcoming physical space for community outreach and worship is valuable, this focus can sometimes overshadow the church’s mission to serve the community and spread the gospel. Resources allocated to building projects may divert funding from outreach programs, missions, and charitable activities.
Paul’s teachings remind us that generosity should stem from a joyful heart and a desire to support the church’s mission. The modern church could benefit from revisiting this principle, ensuring that our focus remains on serving the community and fulfilling our mission rather than solely maintaining our physical structures.
Christ invites us to partake in the mission of generosity and service. He encourages us to contribute, whether through financial gifts, time, or talents. Our generous contributions make a tangible difference, enabling the church to fund outreach programs, missions, and charitable activities that serve the community. By volunteering our time and talents, we further extend the church’s reach and impact. Additionally, we uphold and advance the mission through earnest prayers, aligning our hearts with God’s purpose.
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the wisdom and guidance found in Your Word. Help us to be cheerful givers, sowing generously so that we may reap abundantly in Your kingdom. May our hearts be aligned with Your mission, focusing on serving our community and spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. Guide our church to balance the needs of our building with the more excellent call to be Your hands and feet in the world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
