Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. - 1 Peter 5:6 NIV
Salmon are interesting fish; after birth in freshwater, they swim downstream to saltwater. Then when it is time to spawn, they swim upstream to their fresh waters homes. Salmon battle raging fierce waters, rapids, dams, and predators during their arduous journey to be back in a familiar, safe place. They repeat this treacherous trip every year of their lives.
At times, we all may feel like that salmon fighting against the rages of the troubled waters of our lives. Yet, so often, we are hesitant to humble ourselves and ask for God's help. Instead, we are determined to press through under our power without help, no matter how battered we become.
Today's verse tells us when we confess we can't do it on our own and ask for God's help; he stands ready to step in. We still may need to swim upstream for a while longer, our journey is not quite over, but we are no longer swimming alone. Through Christ, we receive the strength we need to arrive safely to our destination.
God, we give thanks that you stand ready to assist us at all times. Please give us the wisdom to recognize that we don't need to swim through troubled waters alone and ask for your help. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
