The Compassion of a Parent

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. - Psalms 103:13‭ NIV

Compassion for our children begins while yet still in the womb and extends through their lives. Young mothers go to appointments, take vitamins, and abstain from certain activities because they love this unborn child. As they learn to walk and stumble, we kiss away the boo-boos. We teach them the meaning of "no" and what is right and wrong. Throughout their lives, we worry that they make good choices. We do this not from control but compassion. We care for their well-being and do whatever we can to relieve their discomfort because we love them.

All those things that a good and loving parent does for their child, God does too, except he does it better. As well-intentioned as we are, we make mistakes as parents; God does not. He demonstrates his love to us in many ways every day. His compassion for us extends beyond this world to the next.

God, our loving parent, thank you for your compassion. We confess we are not always well-behaved children, we error, and we are not obedient, yet you love us anyway. Thank you for that love. Help us remember the depths of your compassion in sending your only Son for us, and help us share this message with others. We ask this in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
