The Flavor of Grace

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” – Matthew 5:13 (NIV)

When we were on vacation recently, we heard a Cajun band perform at one of the local churches. The tune itself was lively and full of energy — the kind of Cajun rhythm that makes your foot tap without asking permission. One of the songs they sang was titled Zarico Est Pas Salé, which translates as “the zydeco isn’t salty.” In Cajun French, if you ask someone how they’re feeling and they respond pas salé, it means they’re feeling blue—lacking the “spice” or joy of life. 

That little phrase stayed with me, because Jesus uses the same image in today’s scripture. He tells his disciples, “You are the salt of the earth.” In other words, our connection with him is meant to give life its flavor — its purpose, its joy, its distinctiveness. And when we drift from that connection, when we lose the vitality that comes from Christ, we become pas salé ourselves: present, but without the spark that blesses us and the world around us. 

So, the Cajun song becomes a reminder: stay close to the One who gives you your saltiness. Stay rooted in him, so that your life carries the flavor of grace wherever you go. And we stay rooted through prayer, through Scripture, through worship — the simple practices that keep our hearts connected to Christ and our lives full of his salt. 

Gracious God, you are the One who gives us our saltiness — the flavor, the joy, the purpose that comes from being rooted in Christ. Keep us close to you. Keep us grounded in prayer, steady in your Word, and open to your Spirit’s renewing grace. When our hearts feel pas salé, when life loses its spark, draw us back to the source of life. Restore our vitality. Refresh our distinctiveness. Let your love season our thoughts, our words, and our actions. Send us out now as salt for the earth — carrying the flavor of grace wherever we go, blessing both our own lives and the world around us. Amen.
