The Fruit of Our Words

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” — Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)

Have you ever said something unwise that comes back to you later? If you haven’t, you are a wise and blessed person indeed—one I’d like to learn from. But for most of us, an occasional comment slips out. Maybe it seemed harmless at the time, maybe even innocent. Yet later, as we replay the conversation in our minds, we wish that particular word had remained unspoken. It’s into that very human space that today’s scripture speaks. Proverbs reminds us that the words that proceed from our mouths carry weight. They can nurture life or they can do harm.

Our words are never just sounds in the air. They begin as thoughts in the heart and mind, shaped by what is happening within us, and then spoken into the world. And once spoken, they have direction and consequence. A kind word can steady someone who is struggling. A careless remark can bruise a heart that was already tender. A word of encouragement can open a door of hope. A word spoken in frustration can close one. Proverbs tells us that our speech grows into something—fruit that we eventually taste.

The New Testament echoes this truth. Paul urges believers to speak “only what is helpful for building others up” (Ephesians 4:29). And the fruit of the Spirit—gentleness, patience, self-control—shapes not only our actions but our conversations. When we invite the Holy Spirit into our speech, He helps us choose words that heal rather than harm, words that reflect Christ rather than our impulses. We can learn to speak life more often, and to let silence hold the places where harm might otherwise slip out.

Gracious God, guide my words today. Let what I speak be rooted in Your love and shaped by Your wisdom. Where my speech has caused harm, grant me courage to seek healing. Where my words can bring life, help me to offer them freely. Teach me to sow seeds that bear good fruit, for the sake of Christ and for the blessing of those You place in my path. Amen.
