The greatest among you will be your servant. Matthew 23:11 NRSV
When we look at those considered great in society, we often think about money, power, and star quality. These are the figures the media promotes, the billionaire CEO, the influential politician, and the sports figures. It is in our carnal DNA to value worldly thin; this has been the way of humankind since the fall. In taking the fruit, Adam and Eve desired to attain the greatness of God.
Jesus came bringing a revolution. His message? We were looking at the wrong things; we shouldn't look at outward appearances but their actions. Following not those thrust upon us as great, but the meek who serve in humility. Those who like Jesus place others before themselves, even when this may come at a personal sacrifice.
As disciples of Christ, we are called to serve him and our neighbors. At times this may not be easy. It is a struggle against our human nature. There also may be times we feel unqualified to serve. However, all things are possible when we submit to the Holy Spirit. We have the promise God will give us strength in humility and power in obedience.
Most gracious God, we give you thanks for the message of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. Please help us be your servants today, and may our actions not be for our glory but yours. Bless us with a heart for humility and a love for service. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
