The Heirloom

For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalms 100:5 NIV

One of the things I have recently received is a little porcelain figurine of a standard poodle from my mother. Along with it was a note in moms handwriting, “Jim got me this doggie on his senior trip (1956) to Washington, DC.” Each time I look at it, it invokes memories of mom and dad in those early teenage “courting” years, the stories and events, real and imagined. It reminds me of the life they built together, times of joy and adversity, and the all too short time they had together before dad passed in 1979. All of these memories come from a single figurine.

Through the Holy Spirit, God gives us an heirloom to be treasured. We recall the memories and stories of the Spirit working in our lives. All those times, it has provided healing, safety, and strength. But God is not done yet; as long as we breathe, the Holy Spirit endures. This heirloom has the extraordinary capacity to have existed from its outpouring in Acts 2. It is accessible to all people in all times to the end of times that accept Jesus Christ, an heirloom given to all nations, races, and creeds for no other reason than God loves his children.

Almighty and Enduring Father, we give you thanks for your love. Through your Son Jesus Christ, we receive freedom and the promise of eternity with you. Through the Holy Spirit, we experience your faithfulness and love. Help us appreciate these gifts daily and share their joy with others. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
