The Holiness of Never

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”   —Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

Have you ever found yourself saying “never”—only to change your mind?

Sometimes that shift is a sign of growth. We learn, we listen, we soften. A “never” rooted in fear or pride gives way to humility and grace. That kind of change is holy.  It’s part of sanctification—God’s ongoing work of grace shaping us in love.

But there are other “nevers” we hope will hold. The kind spoken in love, in covenant, in promise. “I’ll never leave you.” “I’ll never stop loving you.” These are the words we cling to when everything else feels uncertain.

In Deuteronomy 31, Moses speaks one of those sacred nevers to Joshua—a promise for a time of transition, uncertainty, and leadership change. It’s a promise repeated from verse 5, echoing through the transition of leadership and the unknowns ahead. Moses is stepping aside. Joshua is stepping up. God is stepping in—not just beside, but ahead. That’s the grace that goes before us—prevenient grace—already at work before we ask, already preparing the way.

It isn’t a “never” that might change with new information. It’s a “never” that anchors us.

Centuries later, Jesus echoes this same promise: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Not just in the good days. Not just when we’re faithful. Always. Never leaving. Never forsaking.

And as we receive God’s promise, we’re also called to reflect it—to be people who show up, stay present, and never forsake one another.

Whatever you are facing today, if you’re experiencing a transition, a loss, a burden too heavy to name—hear this “never” as a word of holy presence. God goes before you. God stays with you. God will not let go.

God of steadfast love, thank you for the promises that hold. When our own words falter, when our courage fades, remind us of your “never.” Go before us in the unknown, stay beside us in the struggle, and dwell within us as peace. And make us bearers of your presence—faithful companions to those who feel alone. In the name of your Son, Jesus our Savior and Mediator, we pray. Amen.

Peace & Grace,

Pastor Tim
