The House Within

“One thing I asked of the LORD; this I seek: to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.” (Psalm 27:4 NRSVUE)

Many years ago, on a business trip to Paris, I had the opportunity to visit Notre Dame. My first impression was the cathedral’s sheer enormity, followed quickly by its beauty—the vaulted ceilings, stained glass, sculptures, and art. Standing there, I found myself thinking about the nearly two centuries it took to build and the history it has witnessed: revolutions, wars, and generations of worshippers.

When the fire of April 15, 2019, devastated so much of the structure, the world grieved. Today, after years of careful restoration, Notre Dame has reopened and once again welcomes visitors and worshippers into its sacred space.

Solomon also built a magnificent temple for God, a place of beauty and reverence. Yet even that temple was destroyed, rebuilt, and destroyed again. Scripture reminds us that while sacred spaces matter, God is not confined to any building—no matter how breathtaking.

God walked in the Garden, spoke through burning bushes, and met people on mountaintops. The true dwelling place of the Lord is within each of us. The beauty of God is not found primarily in stone or stained glass but in the transforming work of Christ alive in our hearts.

And when Christ dwells within us, that presence reshapes our lives. Transformed hearts become generous hearts. Forgiven people become forgiving people. Those who have encountered God’s beauty begin to reflect that beauty in the way they speak, serve, and love. Worship becomes not only something we do in sacred spaces but something we live out daily.

Like the psalmist, the one thing we seek is to live in God’s presence and grow in God’s wisdom. Whether we worship in a sanctuary, outdoors under the sky, in one another’s homes, or through the digital tools that now connect us, we carry God’s temple within us. Wherever we gather in Christ’s name, he is present.

Lord, we thank you for making your home within us. Help us to live each day aware of your presence, to recognize your beauty at work in our lives, and to worship you with open and grateful hearts. Wherever we gather in your name, fill us with your grace and make us living temples of your love. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
