The Joy That Shapes Desire

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4 (NIV)

A few years ago, we used Kyle Idleman’s book Not a Fan in our Bible study. One of its recurring themes is something he calls DTR—Define the Relationship. It’s that pivotal moment in any relationship when we name what this connection means and how we intend to move forward. It’s the commitment conversation, whether in a romance or in our walk with God. Following Jesus invites us into that same DTR moment—a choice to move from casual interest to faithful discipleship.

David is an example of someone who established that relationship with God early in his life. He was not perfect—far from it—but his heart kept returning to love. Looking back in his old age, he shares the wisdom of a lifelong commitment: “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Today, let’s take our delight in God. Let’s revel in God’s love and enjoy the time we get to spend with Him. Scripture becomes a place where delight grows—both when we read it alone in the quiet spaces of our lives and when we read it with others, hearing how God’s Word stirs joy and longing in them as well. Our prayers become the intimate conversation of those who know they are His beloved. And in that delight, God shapes not only what we want, but what we deeply desire.

Gracious God, draw us into Your joy. Teach our hearts to delight in You—not out of duty, but out of love. Shape our desires until they reflect Your goodness. As we read Your Word alone and with others, let it deepen our joy and strengthen our relationship with You. Lead us into the life You long to give. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
