May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The Lord be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant."
Psalms 35:27 NIV
If you've ever gone through a tough stretch in life, you'll appreciate Psalm 35. David speaks of people who attempt to ruin his reputation, talk badly about him behind his back, and some even plot to kill him. He's not a perfect example of righteousness, though, at the same time he is listing the bad stuff that is happening to him, he calls on God to rain down destruction on his enemies, Not really the love your enemies taught by Jesus.
In this verse, David gives thanks to his advocates, those in his corner. He also asked that they be aware that the Lord would deliver. While things looked very dark at that moment, help was coming because God will always triumph over evil, and he cared about David's well-being.
Like David, we all experience hard times when we feel anything that can go wrong will. We feel like the old cartoon character Joe Btfsplk from Lil' Abner, who walks around with a permanent cloud over our heads. Yet, though difficult, we need to remember the Lord will be exalted. He is nearby, doing what he does out of his love for us. So hang on in faith a little longer; God is on our side.
Gracious God, thank you for your compassion and concern for us, your servants. In our times of distress, please help us remember that you will prevail. You are already working on our behalf. Help us, God, to trust and be patient. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
