The River

But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! Amos 5:24 NIV

A few years ago, Janice and I went to the Grand Canyon, the first time for me. While I had seen pictures, and films nothing could have prepared me for its extraordinary beauty. This 270-mile chasm was created by the continuous movement of the Colorado River, eroding the rock for millions of years. Peering Into its depths is taking a journey through time.

Can you picture God's justice as the Colorado River flowing continuously through the earth? A time in which each person yields to the therapeutic healing of Christ's waters, restoring our souls. Allowing the power of the Holy Spirit, like a never-failing stream, burrow through the hard rock of our hearts, leaving in its place God's justice. How much differently this world could be. Peace would replace strife, and joy overcomes sorrow.

We know a day is coming when this will happen. Jesus will come again. In the meantime, we have work to do. We are to become that river, preparing the earth for his justice now, sharing his love with everyone, bringing about his righteousness, carrying his justice deeper, broader, and further.

God of Justice, help us to be your never-failing stream. Use us to carry your promise to hope into the hardened world. Bless our efforts, and may they glorify you. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
