"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...." You may recall the scrolling text from the wildly popular Star Wars movies. As the saga plays out over the twelve films, the first in 1977 captures the story of the contest between good and evil.
While Star Wars may be fictional, there is a struggle as old as the ages of the battle for our souls. The scrolling text could easily be from Genesis, "Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed." (2:8). Satan, in the form of the serpent, comes with arguments and pretensions, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (3:1). So man's battle against evil begins.
Satan still comes to us today in various forms and offering different temptations: the things we read, the things we listen to, anything that distracts us from God. Although we constantly face these temptations, God has given us a power greater than any Jedi to demolish Satan's ploys. Through God's grace, we can make our thoughts obedient and pure by turning them to Christ. We need to be prepared for the struggle though, to enter a battle unprepared is unwise. The Word of God is our sword (lightsaber); it is our best offensive and defensive weapon against Satan's arguments.
God, we need you. We confess we often struggle against evil. We acknowledge our only hope lies in Jesus Christ. Please give us the strength to face whatever comes in the days ahead. Fill us with your power to stand against Satan. We pray this in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
