So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1 (NRSV)
I've always been clumsy and uncoordinated. I would have been easy pickings for a sabertooth tiger in caveman times because I would have surely tripped while fleeing. Knowing that, I spend a lot of time looking down at the ground when walking the dogs, checking for loose stones and exposed tree roots. By being hyper-focused on the ground, though, I sometimes miss out on the beauty around me, failing to see what is above.
The same thing happens in our spiritual lives; at times, we remain fixated on earthly things. Our time and energies become too consumed with the here and now. We forget to see and seek the ways of God, settling for the substandard practices of man instead. This is not a new problem; in today's verse, Paul reminds the early church to focus on Christ. He encourages them to shift their sights on things above towards a higher standard, setting aside the sinful worldly norms of man and seeking the pure ways of God.
God, we give thanks for raising with Christ. As we study your word and commune with you, help us to understand your ways. Teach us and guide us. Help us keep our eyes firmly focused above. Take our lives and make them wholly yours. In Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Peace,
Pastor Tim
