We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 NLT
There are countless books on evangelism. Some may look at trends and strategies, and others may teach techniques, but none will tell you it's easy. Witnessing can be challenging and pushes us outside our comfort zone. At any given opportunity, we may encounter atheists, agnostics, agnostic atheists, or those who want to believe but linger in doubt.
How do we respectfully respond to the arguments and opposition we are likely to encounter? How do we share the love of Christ with those who don't believe? Our testimonies of what God has done for us are a start. But, it is also critical that we understand the Bible. In its pages is God's plan for man from the formation of the world to Christ's return. It is terrific if you can remember chapter and verse (most of us can't), but if not, then understanding the story of Jesus is a good start. The Bible also gives us some "how to's" on evangelism (See 1 Peter 3:15, 2 Corinthians 5:20, and 2 Timothy 2:15.) Allow the Spirit to speak through us (Luke 12:12); it will give us the words. Appreciate that this may be a lengthy conversation, with follow-up required.
God, we are thankful for the opportunity to witness. Bless us in our preparation as we study your word and seek guidance. Open our ears to listen and our hearts to understand. Fill us with your Holy Spirit so that we may respond to opposition with gentleness, kindness, and love. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
