Transferred by Grace

"He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son." — Colossians 1:13 (NRSVUE)

When we think of something being "transferred," we usually think of a change in status or authority. The title to a car is transferred from one person to another. A deed is transferred from one owner to the next. It is a legal action that recognizes a new relationship and a new reality.

In today's verse, Paul tells us that we have been transferred. Not because we are mere property, but because we are deeply loved by God. We are precious in God's sight. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that we are God's treasured people, created in God's image and held close to God's heart.

Yet the transfer Paul describes was no simple matter: "He has rescued us from the power of darkness."

Why was this necessary? Because darkness, the condition of fallenness, was never where we were meant to live. Darkness blinds. Darkness isolates. Darkness diminishes hope. Sin, fear, brokenness, and everything that opposes the abundant life God intends for us belong to that realm. Left to ourselves, we cannot free ourselves from its grip.

So God acted.

Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God rescued us and brought us into a new kingdom. This is more than a change of location. It is a change of identity. We no longer belong to the powers that seek to diminish life. We belong to Christ.

And what happens when we are transferred into Christ's kingdom?

We discover who we truly are. We find forgiveness where there was guilt. Hope where there was despair. Purpose where there was wandering. We become citizens of a kingdom marked not by fear and darkness but by grace, mercy, and love.

The good news of the gospel is not simply that we have been saved from something. It is that we have been brought into something. We have been welcomed into the kingdom of God's beloved Son.

Today, remember that you are not forgotten. You are not abandoned. You are not left to find your own way out of the darkness. God deeply loves you, Christ has rescued you, and the Holy Spirit continues to guide and transform you as a citizen of a kingdom that will never end.

Loving God, thank you for rescuing us from the power of darkness and bringing us into the kingdom of your beloved Son. Remind us today who we are and to whom we belong. Help us to live as people of your kingdom, reflecting your light, grace, and love in all that we do. Amen.

Grace & Peace, Pastor Tim
