"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2 NRSV
Our lives starting with our conception, are filled with transformation. We develop in our mother's womb until our birth. We do not remain infants, but we grow, and our bodies change. We learn things through formal education and the “school of hard knocks” that cause our mental faculties to grow. We experience things emotionally that change us; joy, sadness, fear, and pain. These physical, mental, and emotional changes are a healthy and natural part of life’s journey that defines the person we are now.
In today's verse, Paul talks about our spiritual development. To become whole and complete, we need to have a spiritual transformation as well. We experience this change in going to the source of all good, acceptable, and perfect things, God. In acknowledging who God is, accepting the salvation offered through Jesus Christ, and inviting the Holy Spirit into our hearts. There are no substitutes; satisfaction cannot be found in the sinful world because God does not dwell there.
There is one word in the scripture that cannot be ignored, "renewing." It is essential in our spiritual development to remember our baptism and the gifts we receive from God and reaffirm our commitment. We need to desire and seek an ever-evolving and maturing relationship with God through prayer, study, and meditation on his word.
Precious and loving God, we give thanks for your transformation of us. Please help us as we resist sin and the temptation to conform to the world. We remember our baptism and are thankful for the day we acknowledged you at work in our lives. Renew and refresh our spirits today that we may do those things that are good, acceptable, and perfect to you. Amen.
How will you allow God to transform you today?
Blessings!
Pastor Tim
