Trusting God’s Plan

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9 NIV

As someone who has spent years in project management, I thrive on structure and predictability. Yet, life often has other plans. I freely admit that when things veer off course, I am not always the most gracious. But I doubt I’m alone in this; we all prefer when our plans go smoothly.

Proverbs 16:9 reassures us that while it’s natural to make plans, we must remember that God ultimately guides our steps. God has blessed us with minds and reasoning skills and wants us to use them. However, He also desires us to invite Him along on the journey before we start. With God’s guidance, our perspective shifts. For instance, a plan to advance our career might evolve into a mission to serve others through our work.

Does this ensure our plans will go smoothly? No, absolutely not. There will still be some rough seas, but as the waves batter our boat and the water threatens to take us under, we can still experience peace. Like the disciples on the Sea of Galilee, we can be comforted because Jesus is in the boat and commands the wind and waves to be still (Mark 4:39).

Heavenly Father, thank you for the wisdom and abilities you’ve given us to plan our lives. We confess that we often do not seek your will in our planning. Expand our vision; let us see beyond what we want to what can happen through you. Walk with us on our journey and open our hearts to obedience. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
