For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” - Romans 1:17 NIV
In today's verse, two words are of fundamental importance to Christianity, righteousness and faith. Righteousness because it is the essence of God -- he is just and wholly. As followers of Christ, we are to be emulators of who he is, so we too are to be righteous—each day growing into his perfection.
Faith, because it is a humble surrendering of ourselves to our faithful God. It begins when we accept Christ as our Lord, and we relinquish our will to Him. Then, through faith, we are molded into righteous people, shifting our priorities from the carnal to the eternal.
God, we thank you for your righteousness and faithfulness to us. Please help us in our faith to become your righteous people. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
